What is the difference between overwrite and copy profiles?

I read this question:

#116 (closed)

The problem is, it really didn't help with me understanding the difference between the two. I have a paladin main, who I've set my Vuhdo up nicely with and when I'm on an alt I select the profile, it asks me to overwrite or copy. I simply want a 'parent' profile from my paladin, with the others being children. Any changes I make to the parent are applied to the children. Is this possible?

Apolgies if this is not the place to ask, but that thread also suggested that it's fine to ask questions here and it's not solely for bugs.
